Information about XMobiSense

The survey of Mobile Device Usage in Europe using the XMobiSense APP is part of the EC funded GERoNiMO project.

XMobisense is an application developped for Android devices. The aim of the survey is to collect information on patterns and levels of use of mobile phones and tablets in the general population of selected European countries in order to obtain a better understanding of current and evolving trends of use of mobile communication devices in Europe.

All information collected within this survey will be analysed anonymously: the XMobiSense APP does not register your name, email address, mobile phone number or any other personal identifiable data. Neither does it register the contents of your messages or phone calls.

Below you will find a link to download the XMobiSense application to your smartphone or tablet.
You will need confirm that you are at least 18 years old to be able to download XMobiSense.

What is GERoNiMO?

The GERoNiMO (Generalised EMF Research using Novel Methods) project is a multidisciplinary Europeanproject which aims to close the gaps of knowledge on health effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) and toreduce exposure to these fields. Modern mobile communication devices emit EMF radiation. Obtaining information on how these devices are being used is an important part of the GERoNiMO project. The XMobiSense application helps us toachieve this goal.

What is XMobiSense?
XMobiSense is embedded of the larger GERoNiMO project. It is an application for Android and iOS devices.The aim of XMobiSense is to collect data on mobile device usage. We aim to get a better understanding ofthe use of mobile communication devices in the general population of the European Union.

For how long do I have to have the Application
To take advantage of your participation, we need that you have the applicationinstalled a minimum of four weeks

Will you be able to know who I am?
No. XMobiSense does not register your name, email address, mobile phone number or any other personalidentifiable data. It does not register the contents of your messages or phone calls.

What data is being collected by XMobiSense?
XMobiSense collects the following data:

• Date and time of calls (voice calls)
• Call duration (voice calls)
• Laterality: right, left, hands free kit, speaker (currently only for voice calls; voice over IP under development)
• Angles and accelerometer data obtained from sensors on the mobile
• Network type and operator (voice call and total call time)
• LAC and CID: CID is an identification code used to identify the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) or sector of a BTS within a location area code (LAC) (link to urban/rural)
• Received power in the mobile band used and in WiFi (under development)
• Time of sending and receiving SMS
• Quantity of transmitted and received data
• Time of data transmission
• Time of WiFi connection
• The type of mobile and the version of operating system installed on the mobile

What happens to my data?
Once 500kB of data has been collected it is transmitted to our FTP servers. This is only done when you are connected to a WiFi network to prevent data costs. We aim to use the data to gain a better insight in the patterns and levels of mobile device usage in the European Union and to ultimately create an exposure model that can estimate exposure to electromagnetic fields from mobile devices in the general population.

Will XMobiSense use my data bundle?
No, XMobiSense will only send data when the device is connected to a WiFi network to prevent data costs.

How will XMobiSense affect the battery life of my device?
As with all applications, running XMobiSense will drain the battery of your device slightly faster. Ourexperience is that the additional battery drain is hardly noticeable. XMobiSense does not use functions ofyour device that require large amounts of power such as GPS or Bluetooth.

How do I install XMobiSense?
XMobiSense can be downloaded at the top of this page by choosing your version, by confirming that youare at least 18 years or older by checking the box, and then clicking on download. You are then providedwith an installation file to download to your smartphone or tablet. Should you download the installation fileon a computer you will have to transfer it to your mobile device using a USB cable. Once the file is on yourmobile device you can open it to install XMobiSense.When you open XMobiSense for the first time you will be asked to agree with the privacy policy. Pleaseread this carefully! Next, you will be asked a short questionnaire. The questionnaire is completely anonymous and will only show once. After you’ve completed the questionnaire XMobiSense will run in thebackground and you’re good to go! The instruction video at this page will also show you how to install, start and uninstall XMobiSense.

How do I quit?
You can quit anytime you wish by uninstalling the XMobiSense application from your device. Onceuninstalled, no more data will be sent to our FTP servers.

Why can’t I download the iOS version?
The iOS version of XMobiSense is still under development. We will update this page once it is available foruse.

Do you support Windows Mobile?
No. There are currently no plans for a version of XMobiSense for the Windows Mobile OS.

Why can’t I download XMobiSense in Google Play / Apple App store?
By having the central download location for XMobiSense embedded in the GERoNiMO project website weensure that visitors always receive the correct information before deciding to participate in our project.

Privacy policy and disclaimer

XMobiSense privacy policy and liability
This privacy policy governs your use of the software application XMobiSense (“Application”) for mobile devices that was created for Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) by Orange. The Application is used to further scientific knowledge by gaining insight into patterns and level of mobile phone use in various countries within the GERoNIMO project. To obtain this information on the EU population the XMobiSense application for Smartphone and tablets has been developed.

What information does the Application obtain and how is it used?
The application XMobiSense (XMS) WILL NOT RECORD any personal information, only the patterns of use.

User Provided Information
At the time of download, you will be asked to respond to a limited number of questions (including age, sex, country and use of phones and other communicating devices). These questions are only for statistical purposes.

Automatically Collected Information:

The application will Not register:  the content of calls or messages, contact Id or numbers, Websites visited or any other personal information

• It will record, in particular:

• • Calls: Date and time of call (voice calls), Call duration (voice calls), Laterality (right, left), Hands free kit use, Speaker use.
  • Data: Quantity of data transmitted and received in Kb (2G, 3G, 4G and WiFi), time of data transmission, time of WiFi connection, type of mobile device, phone identifier and version of Android or IOS installed.
  • SMS: Time and number SMS sent and received.

Do third parties see and/or have access to information obtained by the Application?
No. Only the study investigators (GERoNiMO) will have access to the information for the purpose of the study. We will not share your information with third parties.

We may disclose User provided and Automatically Collected Information:

• As required by law, such as to comply with a subpoena, or similar legal process;
• When we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, protect
• your safety or the safety of others, investigate fraud, or respond to a government request;
• With our trusted services providers who work on our behalf, do not have an independent use of the information we disclose to them, and have agreed to adhere to the rules set forth in this privacy statement.

What are my opt-out rights?
You can stop all collection of information by the Application easily by uninstalling the Application. You may use the standard uninstall processes available on your mobile device.

Data Retention Policy, Managing Your Information
We will retain User provided data for as long as you use the Application. These data will be stored and used exclusively for scientific research purposes within the study objectives. These data will be kept for a maximum period of five years after the results have been published. If you wish us to delete your data, please contact us at patricia.dellobet@isglobal.org

Children
We do not use the Application to knowingly solicit data from children under the age of 18. If you, as a parent or guardian, become aware your child has provided us with information without your consent, please contact us at patricia.dellobet@isglobal.org . We will delete such information from our files within a reasonable time.

Security
We are vigilant about safeguarding the confidentiality of your information. We provide physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect information we process and maintain. For example, we limit access to this information to authorized employees and contractors who need to know that information in order to operate, develop or improve our Application. Please be aware that, although we endeavor to provide reasonable security for information we process and maintain, no security system can prevent all potential security breaches.

Changes
This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time for any reason. We will notify you of any changes to the Privacy Policy by posting the new Privacy Policy here: www.radiation.isglobal.com/index.php/en/geronimo-home

Your Consent
By using the Application, you are consenting to our processing of your information as set forth in the Privacy Policy. «Processing,” means collecting and conducting statistical analyses on the information collected by the application (see above).  The information will be stored both nationally – in the files of the national study coordinator – as well as in Spain, at the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology in Barcelona, which is coordinating the GERoNiMO project.  In all centres, the information will be processed under strict privacy standards.
